Sweden wants to end dependency on fossil fuels by 2020
Münster/Stockholm, 14. September 2005 – In a speech to the Swedish parliament, Prime Minister Göran Persson announced plans to expand the role of renewable energy sources further. The objective is for Sweden to end its dependency on fossil fuels by 2020. It is envisaged that the proportion of energy generated using renewable energy sources will be increased by 15 billion kilowatt hours over the next ten years.
Persson announced plans to extend wind power and the amount of energy generated from biomass. With regard to the heating sector, tax breaks should provide an incentive for owners of oil heaters to switch to alternative heating systems. The intention is to boost the amount of funding available for research and present a national program to increase energy efficiency as well.
“The use of renewable energy sources in the electricity, heating and fuel sectors is growing internationally under the pressure of climate risks, which are becoming increasingly obvious, and concerns about the mounting dependency on finite energy sources,” says Dr. Norbert Allnoch, head of the International Economic Platform for Renewable Energies (Internationales Wirtschaftsforum Regenerative Energien – IWR) in Münster (Germany). Allnoch also said that all leading industrialized nations will eventually realize the implications for their national industrial policies, causing innovation in the field of renewable energy technologies to escalate globally.
