company profile

The European Testcenter for Domestic Home Ventilation Systems (TZWL) e. V.

Was founded in 1999 as non-profit association. It continues the work of the Department of Applied Technology of the former VEW energy AG and pursues the goal of the promoting rational application of energies in practice, research and teachings. TZWL is an institute of the University of Applied Science Dortmund since 2004. There are interesting fields of co-operation for the University of Applied Science and the TZWL, especially in the field of training engineers. Along with this the TZWL is the only institute recognised by and acting in other European Countries.

business area

Statutory tasks of TZWL:

Task of the association is the promotion of the Science of Rational Energy Engineering with regards to energy, air quality and environmental aspects:

• by development of test concepts for ventilation devices.
• by further training of technicians in specialized technical areas and energy
applications for improved use of ventilation devices and heat pumps in
   practice.
• by general publication of information and documentation from inspection
results in order to increase product quality.
• by improving and optimising instrumentation techniques
   etc.

Purpose Served:

• the preparatory work for the German Institute of Civil Engineering (DIBt)
   Berlin
• the preparatory work for German and International Standardization
• co-operation with the University of Stuttgart, University of Applied Science
   Dortmund whose  specialist area  is “information and electro-technology”;
Laboratory for technical building equipment, further universities and
universities in Germany as well as with international partners (DACH
Initiative), promoting heat pumps in the Swiss Community, Austrian Federal
Heat Pump Association, German Federal Heat Pump Association,
Professional Home Ventilation Device Association, Professional
Association for Hermiticness in the Building industry and the international
   forum on Regeneration Energy.

It is particularly important to the TZWL to generate public interest in the topic of rational energy application technology and supply them with the information.

The TZWL Work Areas:

1. Examinations of the Home Ventilation Devices
The TZWL is one of the German Institutions, which undertakes the examination of home ventilation devices. Our testing examinations involve examining the efficiency of home ventilation devices from leading German and international companies. The guidelines of the German Civil Engineering Institute (DIBT) and the Passive House Institute (PHI) apply.

The examination of home ventilation equipment consists of several test units: In the first test the home ventilation equipment is examined for internal and external leakages. A goal of this investigation is to determine whether the equipment is sufficiently sealed and no pollution of the supply air can take place. The functionality and efficiency of the equipment when the fans are blocked is examined in the second test unit, with regards to ventilation. The electric current consumption of the home ventilation equipment is shown by the high air demand. The third test unit is used for devices with a heat recovery function, to examine the thermodynamic behaviour of the equipment. For the TZWL Thermodynamic Tests, different air conditions are produced and supplied to the equipment. This corresponds to average daily use. From this test units results, it can be determined how well the equipment recovers the warmth stored in exhaust air. For a short time the level of heat supply to the equipment is high.

In order to ensure normal functionality at low outside temperatures, the home ventilation devices are equipped with frost protection systems. This is the fourth test unit. In the fifth and final test unit is examined for the Passive House Institute with regards to determining sound power levels, in order to determine what sound damping measures are required for the development of the home ventilation devices. All results achieved are summarised in a detailed report and given to the manufacturer. This allows the German Institute of Technology to approve the design of the now tested home ventilation equipment. This is a requirement in order to sell home ventilation devices on the German market. Even if the home ventilation device is suitable for use in a Passive House, the TZWL provisions are similar to the Passive House Examination with regards to the main collector for the Passive House Institute.

2. Gebäudedichtheitsmessungen „Blower Door“
The “Blower door is an effective method of determining the hermiticness of buildings and in order to find leakages in individual parts of the building coverage. Upon using this measurement method in the 90s the TZWL achieved measurements for a sealed building. Now the TZWL can rely on experience from several hundred completed measurements.

3. Research and Development of Ventilation Devices and Heat Pump Systems
In the past few years the TZWL has taken part or been responsible for research and development of home ventilation and heat pump systems. On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Traffic, Building and Town Development the TZWL developed suggestions for more efficient inspection techniques for home ventilation devices in co-operation with the University of Bremen and the Passive House Institute.

The TZWL compiled a market survey for the Ministry of Economics, Midlands and Traffic in North Rhine West Falle: “Market for Heat Pumps in Germany and North Rhine West Fall – Structure and Development Possibilities”. In practice the development of the optimal usage of home ventilation devices is for a special purpose: Starting Point for the nowadays worldwide usage of direct current to power fans for home ventilation devices was because of the improved energy efficiency work of the FH Dortmund and the TZWL. The necessity for ventilation systems to be modern and meet regulatory standards is achieved with the help of “low cost” CO” sensors. This new development also leads to substantial increases in efficiency for ventilation systems.

4. Switching from information to the topic energy application technology
A substantial obstacle for the use of energy saving home ventilation systems with heat recovery and heat pumps is the unawareness of their technical and economical pros and cons. The TZWL publishes results of its equipment inspections and publication is the series “bulletin, list for the home ventilation devices with and without heat recovery”. This text has important information for planners and users with regards to the selection of equipment and its usage.

Further Publications:

•  “Home Ventilation Systems and their Suppliers” with planning advice and an
overview of the systems and their suppliers and/or manufacturers.
• “Building Hermiticness including a supplemental EnEV“  with helpful
information roughly related to the topic of Building Hermiticness and Energy
   Saving Regulations.
