E.ON starts work on Helgoland base

E.ON has started construction on its operations and maintenance building on the North Sea Island of Helgoland. The inauguration of the building, which is designed to comprise an area totaling 1,800 square meters, is scheduled for August 2014.

Up to 50 employees working in shifts will support the operation of the Amrumbank West offshore wind farm, which is located approximately 35 kilometers away from the island, either by boat or helicopter. Hence, the company is aiming to reduce the overall maintenance cost by avoiding costly hotel ships or manned offshore platforms next to the wind turbines for future servicing.

The wind farm, which is designed to be equipped with 80 wind turbines and a total capacity of 288 megawatts, is momentarily under construction. When completed, the offshore wind farm is estimated to supply up to 300.000 households with electricity. Completion is scheduled for spring 2015 with a project volume of one billion euros.
