Sea Survival: GWO-certified BST-courses at the Baltic sea

Berlin - Working on wind turbines is dangerous, but working on wind turbines surrounded by deep water, currents, storms and waves is extreme! To avoid accidents and to ensure a safe working environment even on offshore turbines a group of main wind turbine manufacturers founded the Global Wind Energy association to set up training courses for working on turbines: the BST (Basic Safety Training). It comprises five courses and includes the Sea Survival course, which is mandatory for everyone who is working on an offshore wind turbine.

Working on offshore-wind turbines is very different from working onshore. It starts with entering the turbine from the vessel: the vessel may move heavily in the seas, strong winds blowing, one false movement and the employee ends up in the sea - which soon becomes dangerous due to low temperatures, waves, or currents. Knowing how to avoid dangerous situations and accidents, and what to do in case of emergency is vital when working under such conditions.

Akademia_wiatru, the windhunter study and training camp, is located close to the Baltic Sea, which gives the opportunity to hold the courses under real offshore conditions. Instead of training indoors in a pool the training center is located directly at lake Jamno at the Baltic Sea where the wind and weather conditions are the same as offshore. This gives the trainees a very realistic scenario of what they might expect in real life.

The new sea survival course at akademia_wiatru teaches the future turbine workers the skills to understand, detect and treat the various stages of hypothermia and drowning, the safe transfer from vessels, the different man-over-board-procedures, how to use the Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GDMSS) and national Search and Rescue (SAR) services, and many more. A very important part is the practical training under real life conditions.
