Juwi Implements First Wind+Storage Project In Germany

Wörrstadt, Germany - Juwi AG is building a milestone project for the German energy transition around 100 kilometers northeast of Berlin. The only "wind+storage" project in Germany to date is being built in the Uckermark region.

The Wörrstadt-based specialist for project development and operations management was awarded a contract for the "Wind+Speicher" project in September 2020 in the first nationwide innovation tender by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA). The buyer and operator of the project is the CEE Group from Hamburg.

The "Wind+Speicher" project in the Uckermark region

In the Uckermark municipality of Randowtal, preparations are currently underway for the construction of the two Vestas V136 wind turbines, each with an installed capacity of 3.6 MW. The turbine components are to be delivered and erected from mid-November 2021 so that commissioning can take place by January 2022. For Juwi, the construction of the additional storage unit is uncharted territory in Germany. Plans call for a lithium-ion storage system with a capacity of almost three megawatt hours (MWh) from Smart Power, including the corresponding measurement and control technology.

"With this solution we are able to feed the electricity more consistently into the grid than before, especially in times of low wind," explains Juwi project manager Frank Elbers. Construction of the storage facility will take place towards the end of the wind turbine construction phase. The commissioning of the storage facility is planned to follow the commissioning of the wind turbines.

Financing via market premium and PPA

Juwi is taking a new approach to project financing with its parent company MVV and its partner CEE Group. In addition to the fixed market bonus that Juwi was able to secure for a period of 20 years as part of the innovation tender in September 2020, the future operator CEE Group also benefits from the power purchase agreement (PPA) which juwi and MVV offer for an initial period of ten years.

"In addition to several post-EEG power purchase agreements and numerous PPAs abroad, this is already the second German project with PPAs for us," emphasizes Frederik Faißt, head of project financing at Juwi AG. The debt financing for the project was provided by Berliner Volksbank.
