GE Grid Solutions And HSM Offshore Energy To Cooperate On Offshore Substations
Paris, France / Schiedam, Netherlands - To respond to the growing demand for turnkey offshore high-voltage substations in the fast-growing offshore wind market, the Grid Solutions division of US-based General Electric (GE) and HSM Offshore Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The memorandum of understanding between GE's Grid Solutions and HSM Offshore Energy aims to support the development of offshore wind projects by providing an optimised and cost-effective turnkey offering to help accelerate the energy transition. This is to include complete engineering, procurement and manufacturing, including the HV equipment, grid compliance studies, full testing and pre-commissioning, transport, installation at sea and then final hook up and commissioning. In addition, the two companies believe the developers could benefit from GE and HSM's ongoing standardisation efforts aimed at achieve the lowest cost of electricity (LCOE) while taking away interface risks in both the construction and operational phases of offshore substations.
GE brings to this partnership excellence in project engineering and management, as well as a complete portfolio of key electrical equipment and a global footprint, said Philippe Piron, president and CEO of GE's Grid Solutions business. Over the past 15 years, Grid Solutions has won major contracts to supply high-voltage AC systems for 18 offshore substations that connect more than 5,000 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind farms in Europe to the grid.
HSM was a pioneer in the offshore wind market with the delivery of the world's first high-voltage substation off the coast of Denmark. The company has also contributed to the connection of 3,500 MW of offshore wind farms in Europe, said Jaco Lemmerzaal, managing director at HSM Offshore Energy. The company has its own yard with large climate-controlled construction and assembly halls and deep-water quay sides with open North Sea access, and a high number of experienced and loyal permanent staff covering full turnkey capabilities, Lemmerzaal added.
