Wind Market South America: Vestas Scores with Mega Order in Brazil

Aarhus, Denmark - Casa dos Ventos, one of the pioneers and largest investors in the development of wind projects in Brazil, has awarded Vestas a mega order for the second stage of the Rio do Vento wind farm complex in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in Brazil.

The order volume comprises wind turbines with a capacity of over 534 megawatts (MW). Together with the first phase of the project (504 MW), which is currently under construction, the combined complex of more than 1,000 MW will be the largest wind project in Latin America to date.

Vestas has developed a specially customized version of V150-4.2 MW wind turbines for the project. In order to maximize the site's electricity production while ensuring the lowest possible energy costs for the energy consumer, some turbines will be delivered in a power optimized mode at 4.3 MW and others at 4.5 MW. The contract includes the supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines as well as a 20-year service contract. The project is expected to come on stream in 2023.

This is the third contract signed between the partners in less than two years, totalling 1,200 MW of wind turbines, underlining the strong collaboration between Vestas and Casa dos Ventos. With this deal, Vestas further strengthens its presence in Brazil, where the company now has a total order intake of more than 5,500 MW.

The Vestas share, which is listed in the global share index for renewable energies RENIXX, left trading yesterday with a slight daily loss of 0.7 percent at 166.40 euros (closing price 02.12.2020, Stuttgart stock exchange).
