Display Problems: Tesla Announces Voluntary Recall Campaign

Fremont, USA - Electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has agreed to a recall of 2012-2018 Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles whose central display is equipped with a specific processor and memory device.

That's according to an announcement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. and a statement on Tesla's website. The NHTSA had initiated the proceedings. Tesla emphasizes on its U.S. website that it is voluntarily and proactively recalling the vehicles.

The problem: According to the NHTSA, lash memory device for the center display reaches lifetime wear, the controller will no longer be able to maintain the integrity of the filesystem, causing a failure in some of the center display functions. Apparently affected are the rearview camera and the windshield heating system. According to media reports, the total number of vehicles affected by the recall is around 135,000.

Tesla will notify the owners of the vehicles and will replace the daughterboard with one containing an enhanced controller, free of charge,.the NHTSA announced. The recall is expected to begin on March 30, 2021. According to media reports, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrtbundesamt) in Germany is also considering a recall of vehicles in Germany, but has not yet made a decision.

Is Tesla getting in on BYD?

The South Korean newspaper Chosun reports with reference to Chinese online media that Tesla wants to get into the Chinese competitor BYD. According to the report, Tesla plans to acquire a 20 percent stake in BYD for $36 billion. 10 percent of the stake is to be bought in cash and another 10 percent is to be financed through Tesla shares. However, BYD is said to have already denied Tesla's entry.

In today's trading, the share price is currently up 0.9 percent at 716.7 euros (2021-02-03, 13:33, Stuttgart Stock Exchange). Since the beginning of the year, the price of the Tesla share has thus increased by around 30 percent.
