Verila Solar Project: Largest Solar Power Plant in Bulgaria on Schedule

Sofia, Bulgaria - Construction of Bulgaria's largest solar power plant is on schedule and is expected to be completed by spring 2023. The new power plant with a capacity of 124 MW is being built south of Sofia by Sunotec Group.

The Verila project has been under construction since September 2022. The biggest challenge for developer Sunotec, based in Bulgaria and Germany, is the nature of the site - a hilly terrain in the Verila Mountains - east of the small town of Dupnitsa, about an hour's drive south of the capital Sofia. Valentin Gospodinov, Country Manager for Bulgaria, says: "The location of the solar power plant at an altitude of between 700 and 1,000 meters above sea level, with slopes of up to 18 degrees, is one of the most adventurous and unique in Europe."

Starting in spring 2023 the Verila solar power plant will habe a significant contribution to Bulgaria's green power mix. According to the Public Renewable Energy Register, a total of 1,033 MW of solar capacity was installed at the end of November 2022. In terms of total capacity, the new Verila solar project will reach 124 MW, accounting for 12 percent of total PV capacity in Bulgaria.
