Emergency Power Supply Included: SMA Equips Hospital in Ukraine With Solar Storage Solution

Niestetal, Germany / Brovary, Ukraine - Together with the Repower Ukraine Foundation, SMA has equipped the Brovary Multidisciplinary Clinical Hospital in Ukraine with a solar solution that enables a round-the-clock power supply.

In the future, the 21 kW solar and 7 kWh storage system will enable the hospital to cover around half of its energy consumption of approximately 30,000 kWh/year and thus significantly reduce electricity costs. An important aspect in the selection of the system was the secure power supply, even at night and/or in the event of a supply grid failure, as the hospital has departments for pediatrics, infectious diseases and maternity.

The hospital in the city of Brovary, east of Kiev, provides medical care for around 200,000 people. In total, the medical facility has 24 departments and centers, and the solar power system installed is specifically designed to provide emergency power for the hospital's intensive care unit. In view of the Russian invasion and attacks on the energy infrastructure, the decentralization of Ukraine's energy supply plays an important role on the way to greater energy security and resilience.

The commissioning ceremony, which was also broadcast digitally as a hybrid event, was attended by representatives of the city of Kiev and the Ukrainian Ministry of Health as well as embassy representatives from European countries and international project partners.

“This project impressively demonstrates what has driven us at SMA since the company was founded: To enable an independent, cost-effective and secure energy supply. With the solar and storage solution, the hospital is a flagship project in terms of energy independence and environmental compatibility,” said SMA CEO Jürgen Reinert.

“It is primarily about the energy independence of the community of Brovary, the resilience of critical infrastructure and ensuring medical services for the population despite the challenges posed by constant power outages. We are creating a model to support the energy supply of hospitals, which needs to be extended to other medical facilities across Ukraine with the involvement of local and central authorities,” adds Iaroslava Denisova, CEO Repower Ukraine Foundation.

SMA is a member of the Repower Ukraine Foundation and, in addition to the solar and battery inverters, has also donated the other components of the system, such as PV modules and battery storage systems, and assumed responsibility for the design, planning and installation costs.
