Location Near General Motors - Nel ASA to Build Gigafactory in US State of Michigan
Oslo, Norway - Norwegian hydrogen specialist Nel ASA has selected Plymouth Charter Township, a suburb of Detroit in Michigan, for its next gigafactory.
"Plymouth Charter Township is an ideal location for Nel. Here we have access to a highly skilled workforce, universities and research facilities, and we are close to our collaborative partner General Motors. In addition, the Government and the authorities of Michigan have provided a very attractive financial support package for us," says Håkon Volldal, CEO of Nel.
The Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) has also decided to support the project with a USD 10 million grant for business development in Michigan. The MSF board also approved a 15-year, 100 per cent State Essential Services Assessment (SESA) waiver application of up to USD 6.25 million to support the project.
Nel has received more than USD 50 million in support for its Michigan site to date. Pending approval of additional state and federal applications, this amount could increase to around USD 150 million.
The Plymouth plant will build on Nel's fully automated electrolyser concept developed at its production facility in Herøya, Norway. Similarly, the expansion of the Wallingford plant will play a crucial role in creating a blueprint for the expansion of Nel's PEM electrolyser production.
The factory will be built in stages to match supply with demand. A final investment decision for the construction of this plant has not yet been made.
