VSB begins construction of Liethe-Lehmden repowering wind farm in Lower Saxony
© VSB GroupDresden (renewablepress) - VSB has begun construction of the Liethe-Lehmden repowering wind farm in the municipality of Rastede, Lower Saxony. Three new wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 18 megawatts (MW) will replace four existing turbines. The new wind farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity each year to meet the equivalent annual demand of around 11,300 three-person households. Annual electricity generation will therefore increase more than tenfold compared with the existing wind farm.
The repowering project at Liethe-Lehmden marks VSB’s first wind farm in Lower Saxony. The project is being managed by VSB’s regional office in Osnabrück. Preliminary archaeological investigations at the site have been completed. Work is now under way to set up the construction site, build access roads and prepare crane hardstands. Ground conditions at one of the turbine locations pose a particular challenge: the soil is waterlogged and contains peat in places. Additional measures are therefore required to ensure that the construction area is dry and has sufficient load-bearing capacity. Preparatory work for the foundations is scheduled for completion by the end of the year, marking an important project milestone.
Dismantling of the four existing NEG Micon NM52 turbines, each with a capacity of 0.9 MW, is scheduled to begin in February 2027. Components for the three new Vestas V150 turbines are due to arrive from June 2027. A self-propelled blade transporter will be used to deliver the rotor blades to the site. Commissioning is planned for late summer 2027.
“The start of construction brings our plans to life on site. We are upgrading a location with a long history of wind power generation and significantly increasing its output,” says Thomas Winkler, Managing Director of VSB in Germany.
VSB is also developing further wind energy projects in Lower Saxony. In July 2026, the Oldenbrok Süd project, located around 20 kilometres away and with a planned total capacity of 14 MW, received approval.
