Floating Offshore Wind: Buchan Offshore Wind Project Reaches Key Milestone With Completion of Metocean Campaign

Edinburgh, Scotland - Service company Baywa r.e. is developing the Buchan Offshore Wind floating offshore wind farm off the north-east coast of Scotland in partnership with floating offshore wind project specialist BW Ideol and Elicio, a Belgian developer, owner and operator of offshore wind farms.

The project, which has a capacity of around 1,000 MW (1 GW), is located around 75 km north-east of Fraserburgh. The partners have now reached the next milestone with the completion of the meteorological and oceanographic surveys, including a Lidar survey. Survey specialist Partrac recently recovered the project's LIDAR and seabed instruments.

The two-year metoceanic and floating lidar campaign collected data required for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and detailed design of the project.

“The data gathered confirms that the site benefits from a tremendous wind resource and also supports us in progressing at pace with maturing our engineering design development. The project team is now working on finalising our environmental assessments ahead of us submitting our consent applications in the middle of this year”, said Clare Lavelle, Project Director of Buchan Offshore Wind, welcoming the completion of the measurement campaign.

With an expected capacity of almost 1,000 MW (1 GW) and a connection date of 2033, the project would comprise up to 70 turbines, according to the companies.

The patented Damping Pool technology from project partner BW Ideol is to be used for the floating substructure. With regard to on-site production, BW Ideol is currently working on setting up a production center in the former oil and gas factory in Port of Ardersier.
