Wind Expansion in Thuringia Picks Up in 2025: Energiequelle Begins Construction of Werther/Wipperdorf Wind Farm with Nordex Technology

Werther/Münster (Germany) - The expansion of wind energy in Thuringia is gaining some momentum again in 2025. Contributing to this trend is Energiequelle GmbH, which has started construction of the Werther/Wipperdorf wind farm.

In the municipality of Werther and the town of Bleicherode, four Nordex turbines of the N163 type are being built, each with a capacity of 6.8 megawatts and a hub height of 164 meters. According to Energiequelle, the generated wind power will be sufficient to supply around 15,000 households and save approximately 37,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

The construction start follows a project development phase of about ten years. After submitting the permit application in November 2022, Energiequelle received approval under the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) in September 2024.

With the award in the wind energy tender in April 2025, the project officially entered the construction phase. Foundation work is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with full commissioning planned for January 2027. “The start of construction marks an important milestone and confirms that our trust in the project has paid off,” said project manager Maria Löther.

The local energy cooperative Helmetal eG is also involved. “Revenue from the wind farm will help refinance a community wind turbine,” emphasized Hans-Jürgen Weidt, chairman of the cooperative’s supervisory board.

Following the start of construction in Sömmerda in August, the Werther project marks Energiequelle’s second wind farm in Thuringia to move into implementation. According to Energiequelle, additional wind farms are already planned for 2026.

Thuringia’s Wind Market Gains Momentum

According to data from the Market Master Data Register of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA), ten new wind turbines with a total capacity of 59 megawatts were commissioned in Thuringia between January and October 2025. In the entire year 2024, new installations amounted to only 34.9 megawatts. This indicates a moderate upward trend in the first ten months of 2025, even though decommissioning continues to offset gross expansion.
