Offshore Innovation by Ørsted in the North Sea: Luxcara Chooses Ørsted’s Low-Noise Osonic Installations

Fredericia, Denmark – Danish offshore wind pioneer Ørsted is taking its low-noise installation method Osonic into the commercial phase. The company has signed a framework agreement as preferred supplier with the German energy infrastructure asset manager Luxcara.

Osonic is a jet-based monopile installation method that significantly reduces underwater noise while also helping to cut costs. The technology is planned to be used for offshore wind turbine foundations across Luxcara’s German portfolio.

Patrick Harnett, Executive Vice President and Chief Construction Officer at Ørsted, said: “By reaching an agreement with Luxcara, we’re taking Osonic from concept to commercial offering, which demonstrates Ørsted’s strong track record of innovation as well as Osonic’s potential.”

The Osonic technology was developed over several years and was first successfully deployed at the Gode Wind 3 offshore wind farm. Its use there resulted in a 99 percent reduction in underwater noise compared with conventional installation methods. Noise levels were reduced to just above the natural background sound in the German Bight.

Holger Matthiesen, Director of Offshore Wind & Green Hydrogen at Luxcara, emphasized: “Its proven performance under conditions comparable to our projects was a decisive factor for us to consider the innovative technology.”

Ørsted will license the technology and also act as engineering, procurement, and construction advisor for Luxcara. Ørsted’s Osonic technology was awarded the German Sustainability Award in October 2025.

With Osonic, Ørsted aims to make offshore wind projects more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable. Ørsted has its own R&D capabilities with a team of science and engineering experts managing numerous projects and collaborates with over 50 universities and research institutions to bring the best ideas from the lab into practice.
