Engie Expands International Battery Portfolio: Engie Enters the Indian Energy Storage Market
Paris (France) - The French energy group Engie has, for the first time, been awarded a contract in India for a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 280 MW and 560 MWh.
As of 30 June 2025, Engie already had nearly 2 GW of wind and solar capacity in operation or under construction in India. The company is supporting the country’s energy targets, which aim to reach a total of 500 GW (500,000 MW) of renewable generation by 2030. Engie plans to expand its renewable energy and storage portfolio in India to 7 GW by 2030.
Engie is also strengthening its position in battery storage worldwide. The global BESS portfolio in operation or under construction amounted to 5.6 GW as of 30 June 2025 and contributes to the Group’s goal of reaching a total of 95 GW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2030.
Paulo Almirante, Senior Executive Vice President for Renewable and Flexible Power at Engie, stated: “This first large-scale battery storage project in India marks a decisive step for ENGIE in a fast-growing market for renewables and storage. It illustrates our commitment to accelerating the energy transition wherever we operate, while delivering flexibility, stability, and security to power systems.”
