Storage as an Integral Component of RWE’s Strategy: RWE Invests in Lower Saxony’s Largest Battery Storage Facility in Lingen
Essen/Lingen (Germany) - RWE is building the largest battery storage facility in Lower Saxony to date in Lingen. A 400-megawatt battery park with a storage capacity of at least 800 megawatt-hours (MWh) is being constructed on the site of the former Dralon GmbH. Commissioning is planned for 2028.
The battery park will comprise more than 200 lithium-ion battery units, over 100 inverters, two high-voltage transformers, and two switchyards. Grid connection will be via the nearby Hilgenberg substation. Construction preparations on the 8.5-hectare site will begin on February 2.

Dieter Krone, Mayor of Lingen, sees the project as playing a central role for the energy hub: “The construction of the battery storage facility ensures that the power grid remains stable and that short-term fluctuations can be efficiently balanced. With these forward-looking developments, another important step is being taken in the transformation of the Lingen energy site.”
By the end of the third quarter of 2025, RWE was operating battery storage systems with a total capacity of around 1.2 gigawatts worldwide. More than an additional 2.7 gigawatts are currently under construction. The new storage facility in Lingen is part of the strategy to expand global storage capacities and support the energy transition with a stable power supply.
