RWE Wins UK Wind and Solar Auction: RWE Awarded Contracts for 290 MW of Solar and Wind Projects in the UK
Essen (Germany) - Energy company RWE has secured long-term, symmetric Contracts for Difference (CfDs) for a total of 290 megawatts of solar and onshore wind capacity in the UK’s seventh renewable energy auction round (AR7).
The CfDs run for 20 years. Under these symmetric CfDs, a fixed strike price applies: if the market price falls below the strike price, RWE receives the difference from the UK government; if the market price rises above it, RWE must repay the difference. This makes revenues more predictable and fully reflects price risk. In the UK, strike prices are linked to the UK Consumer Price Index (CPI). This means the minimum compensation automatically increases each year with inflation, as measured by the CPI.
The newly awarded projects could theoretically supply around 240,000 UK households with electricity annually. For RWE, the success represents a further expansion of its strong market position in the UK. The company already operates onshore wind farms with 730 MW and solar plants with 185 MW capacity there. In addition, further solar and wind projects totaling more than 670 MW are currently under construction.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, emphasized the strategic importance of the UK market: “We are delighted to have secured long-term offtake contracts for eight solar and onshore wind projects in Allocation Round 7. This achievement marks an important milestone for RWE as we continue to deliver our UK solar and onshore wind development pipeline and underscores the strategic importance of the UK market to our business.”
