German Electric Vehicle Registrations Surge in July as International Automakers Deliver Nearly Half of All BEVs

Flensburg — Germany's market for battery-electric vehicles (BEV) continued to gain momentum in July, with new data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA) showing another sharp rise in BEV market share. According to the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK), international automakers are on track to reach a record share of the German BEV market.

The structural shift in Germany's passenger car market is continuing, with the VDIK attributing much of the BEV growth to an expanding range of affordable battery-electric models in the entry-level segment. According to the VDIK, the BEV market's overall share in July reached its highest level by a wide margin since Germany's commercial EV purchase incentive expired in August 2023, and marked the third-highest monthly figure on record.

KBA: BEV Share Climbs to 29.3 Percent in July

According to KBA figures released on August 6, 2026, a total of 268,068 new passenger cars were registered in Germany in July 2026, up 1.2 percent from 264,802 in July 2025. Battery-electric vehicles recorded particularly strong growth, with 78,609 new registrations compared to 48,614 a year earlier, a rise of 61.7 percent that pushed the segment's market share to 29.3 percent.

Plug-in hybrids reached 30,609 units in July, up 12.5 percent from 27,197 in July 2025, for a market share of 11.4 percent. Including plug-in models, total hybrid vehicle registrations came to 105,284 units (July 2025: 102,369), a market share of 39.3 percent.

By contrast, gasoline vehicles fell 29.7 percent to 50,732 units (July 2025: 72,192), a market share of 18.9 percent, while diesel vehicles dropped 21.8 percent to 31,703 units (July 2025: 40,529), a market share of 11.8 percent. Average CO2 emissions of newly registered cars declined to 91.2 grams per kilometer, down 15.1 percent from 107.4 g/km in July 2025.

In the first seven months of 2026, a total of 446,615 new battery-electric vehicles were registered, up 50.2 percent from 297,340 in the same period of 2025. BEVs accounted for 25.5 percent of the 1,752,461 total new passenger car registrations in the January–July period (Jan.–July 2025: 1,667,591).

VDIK: International Automakers Deliver Nearly Every Second Electric Car

In its analysis of the KBA data, the VDIK highlighted the growing contribution of international brands to BEV market growth. According to preliminary VDIK figures, new BEV registrations by international manufacturers rose 93.7 percent year-on-year in July to 38,824 vehicles, outpacing the overall BEV market's 61.7 percent growth reported by the KBA.

International manufacturers' BEV market share is estimated to have reached 49.4 percent, the highest monthly figure to date. Across all drivetrain types, international brands' overall market share stood at 44.6 percent in July and 44.2 percent since the start of the year.

Among import brands holding at least 1.5 percent market share, Chinese manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) recorded the largest increase in July, with registrations up 365.4 percent year-on-year, according to KBA registration data.

"The strong range of affordable BEVs in the entry-level segment is being well received," said Imelda Labbé, President of the VDIK. According to Labbé, more than half of the battery-electric vehicles delivered by international manufacturers originate from Europe.

How the growth divides between German and international brands going forward will likely depend on how the competition for affordable entry-level models, as described by the VDIK, develops in the coming months.
