Solar Repowering in Italy: Tion Renewables Raises Capacity of Three Solar Farms by Nearly 40 Percent

Munich – Independent power producer Tion Renewables has modernised three photovoltaic plants in Italy and, according to the company, increased their installed capacity by nearly 40 percent. The upgrade required neither additional land nor new grid connections.

The project combines the technical upgrade of older solar farms with the continued use of existing infrastructure and feed-in tariffs. For plant operators, repowering can thus be an alternative to developing new sites exclusively. The three solar farms are located in Veneto in northern Italy and in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. They have been in operation since 2011 and 2012 respectively. Tion replaced the previous fixed module mounting structures with tracking systems and installed new solar modules.

According to the company, the existing feed-in tariffs will remain in place for the coming years. The new technology is also intended to allow operations to continue beyond the end of the feed-in tariff remuneration. Tion does not specify the installed capacity before and after the modernisation or the additional electricity yields achieved.

The repowering is part of Tion Renewables’ strategy of enhancing the economic value of existing assets through technical modernisation, hybridisation and optimised financing structures. According to the company, Tion operates a portfolio of renewable energy assets totalling 887 MW across several European markets. EQT Group is the shareholder.
