Turning Point in E-mobility: MAN Launches Series Production of Electric Trucks

Munich, Germany - After a century of diesel trucks, MAN is starting series production of electric trucks at its Munich site. Following the production of e-buses, the transformation from diesel to electric drive is now also entering the active phase for trucks.

MAN has invested almost 400 million euros in its predominantly Bavarian sites in order to accelerate the transition to electromobility in the commercial vehicle sector. The MAN plant in Munich is a pioneer in the flexible production of electric and diesel trucks on the same production line. MAN's Starachowice site in Poland has been producing electric buses since October 2021.

Historic moment in Munich: series production of MAN e-trucks launched

In Munich, the conversion of truck production has been completed. Both diesel and electric trucks can now be produced on the same production line. MAN CEO Alexander Vlaskamp: "The start of series production of our electric trucks is historic. It marks a turning point in our history! The future of MAN begins now, at this very moment. The entire MAN team is proud to be actively shaping the transformation from diesel to electric drive. With our highly efficient e-trucks, locally emission-free freight transport is becoming a reality."

MAN has invested almost 400 million euros in research and development in order to be able to offer its conventional truck product portfolio with a battery-electric drive. The truck range extends from 12 to 50 tons total weight.

The maximum production capacity is currently around 100 trucks per day - regardless of the drive type. It takes around eight hours to produce each truck.

MAN target for 2025: delivery of the first 1,000 electric trucks

Before the start of series production, MAN manufactured and handed over almost 200 electric pre-series vehicles to customers. These vehicles have already driven around two million kilometers in real customer use on Europe's roads - some with daily trips of up to 850 kilometers and average consumption of 97 kWh per 100 kilometers.

The e-trucks can be equipped with three to six modularly combinable NMC batteries (nickel-manganese-cobalt), which are manufactured at the MAN plant in Nuremberg. These offer a gross capacity of up to 534 kWh. This means that up to 500 kilometers are easily possible without intermediate charging. For even greater ranges, there is even an optional seventh battery, with which it is possible to drive up to 740 kilometers on battery power without intermediate charging.

So far, MAN has received around 700 orders for its electric trucks. The first 1,000 vehicles are to be produced and delivered by the end of 2025.

MAN has been producing electric buses at its site in Poland since 2021

MAN is the market leader in Europe for electric city buses, which MAN Truck & Bus has been producing at its Polish plant in Starachowice since October 2021. The company was also recently the first European manufacturer to present an electric coach in Ankara. According to MAN, over 2,500 MAN buses with battery-electric drives are already in operation in European cities.

According to MAN, over 2,500 of the manufacturer's battery-electric buses are already in use in European cities. In the new model year, these - like the trucks - will be equipped with batteries from Nuremberg. MAN has invested 250 million euros in setting up its own battery pack production facility there alone.
