Electric Car Boom in Germany: Share of Fully Electric Cars Rises to 23 Percent in Q1 2026
Flensburg (Germany) - In the first quarter of 2026, the share of newly registered passenger cars in Germany with alternative powertrains increased significantly. This is shown by figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt), which includes alternative drives as including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrids (including plug-in hybrids), as well as vehicles powered by fuel cells, gas, and hydrogen.
Of all new registrations in the first quarter, 235,750 vehicles - or 33.7 percent - were equipped with an electric drivetrain (BEV, plug-in hybrid, fuel cell), representing an increase of 33.4 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
Pure battery electric vehicles accounted for 159,630 passenger cars during the reporting period. This corresponds to a BEV share of 22.8 percent of total registrations and an increase of 41.3 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.
The top 10 ranking of BEV manufacturers from January to March 2026 is led by Volkswagen with 23,888 new vehicles, giving the Wolfsburg-based automaker a 15 percent share of the BEV segment. Skoda, also part of the Volkswagen Group, ranks second with 17,958 vehicles and 11.3 percent, followed by Tesla in third place (12,829 vehicles, 8.0%). Audi (12,462 vehicles, 7.8%) and BMW (11,885 vehicles, 7.5%) rank fourth and fifth, respectively. They are followed by Mercedes (10,339 vehicles, 6.5%), Seat (7,134 vehicles, 4.5%), and Opel (6,938 vehicles, 4.4%). The two South Korean manufacturers Hyundai (6,423 vehicles, 4.0%) and Kia (4,957 vehicles, 3.1%) take ninth and tenth place.
In addition to the individual brand analysis, the data highlights the particular importance of the Volkswagen Group in the BEV segment: the brands Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, and Seat together achieved 61,442 new registrations, corresponding to a combined market share of 38.5 percent of the total BEV market.
