High-performance Batteries Without Lithium: Finnish Startup Geyser Batteries Builds Pilot Plant

Helsinki, Finland - Geyser Batteries, a Finnish startup for innovative batteries, has unveiled plans for a pilot plant. Based on support from private investors and the government organization Business Finland, Geyser Batteries Oy initially conducted extensive R&D work in 2019-2021 to automate the production of its novel battery cells and modules.

Now the battery startup wants to move to the next phase and build a pilot plant including an R&D center. At the end of the site search process, the city of Mikkeli came out on top. Geyser Batteries' headquarters will remain in Helsinki. The new pilot plant is expected to be operational as early as mid-2022 and will initially employ around 30 people.

Geyser Batteries Oy develops and produces a new class of high-performance, water-based non-lithium batteries that provide over one million fast charge cycles even at extremely low ambient temperatures. Technically, it is a mixture of supercapacitors and batteries combined in one system. Thanks to the use of aqueous electrolytes and novel electrochemistry, Geyser Batteries' products have a low carbon footprint, are fully fire-safe and competitive, the company says.
