Expansion Into Germany: Neoen Begins Construction of Its First Large-Scale Battery Storage Facility in Germany in Saxony-Anhalt

Paris, France / Karlsruhe, Germany - French independent power producer and operator of energy storage solutions Neoen has awarded storage solutions specialist Nidec the contract to begin construction of Neoen's first large-scale energy storage facility in Germany. Official start of construction of the project was in December 2024.

The site of the 2-hour battery storage system with an output of 45 MW and a storage capacity of 90 MWh is located near Arneburg in Saxony-Anhalt. The battery is scheduled to be fully operational in 2026. In line with its business model, Neoen will be the 100 percent owner and operator of the Arneburg Battery project.

With this expansion into Germany, Neoen is continuing its strategy of expanding its extensive expertise in the field of large-scale battery storage and transferring it to the German market. The company has been a global pioneer in battery storage since 2017 and is one of the leading players worldwide.

Neoen's global storage portfolio currently comprises 2.3 GW / 5.3 GWh of facilities in operation or under construction. These include some of the largest battery storage facilities in the world, such as the 270 MW / 540 MWh Western Downs Battery and the 560 MW / 2,240 MWh Collie Battery in Australia, as well as several significant projects in Europe, including the Isbillen Power Reserve (93.9 MW / 93.9 MWh) in Sweden and the Yllikkälä Power Reserve in Finland (86.4 MW / 142.9 MWh), which are among the largest in the Nordic countries.

The Arneburg battery marks Neoen's first investment in storage technologies in Germany and is in line with the company's goal to establish itself as a leading player in the German battery sector. Since its foundation in Karlsruhe in 2023, Neoen has developed several storage projects across Germany and built a portfolio of more than 1 GW in various stages of development.

“Starting construction of the Arneburg Battery is a major step in our commitment to supporting Germany’s shift toward clean, reliable energy solutions,” commented Andrés Marx, Managing Director of Neoen Germany, on the start of construction work. Arneburg paves the way for Neoen's future in Germany, where the company is pursuing ambitious goals and has several projects in development, Marx added.

In 2024, the Neoen share, which is listed in the RENIXX World regenerative share index, recorded a price increase of 31.7% to EUR 36.98 (closing price on December 30, 2024, Stuttgart Stock Exchange). The share price currently stands at EUR 39.66 (as of 12:12 p.m., January 8, 2025, Stuttgart Stock Exchange).
