OX2 Hands Over Niinimäki Wind Farm: OX2 Strengthens Finland’s Emission-Free Power Supply with 145 MW

Stockholm (Sweden) - Swedish project developer OX2 has officially handed over the Niinimäki wind farm in northern Finland to its owners. The operators are Helen, a municipal energy company based in Helsinki, and the Bank of Åland’s wind power fund. The wind farm consists of 22 turbines with a total installed capacity of 145 megawatts.

The projected annual production is 400 million kWh (400 GWh). Based on an average household consumption of 5,000 kWh per year, the wind farm can theoretically cover the electricity needs of around 80,000 households. OX2 will remain involved and continue to provide technical and commercial management.

According to OX2, the company currently has nine wind energy projects under construction across five markets, with a combined installed capacity of around 1,500 MW (1.5 GW).

Finland has been increasingly focusing on emission-free electricity generation for years. Today, around 95 percent of Finnish electricity production is already considered emission-free. New wind farms are being built without government subsidies, underscoring the competitiveness of the sector.

Given these favorable conditions, Finland plays an important role in the European energy market, particularly with regard to the planned cross-border hydrogen infrastructure. The Finnish hydrogen strategy aims to supply ten percent of the EU’s green hydrogen by 2030. In parallel, the state-owned grid operator Gasgrid Finland, with support from the EU, is pushing ahead with the development of cross-border infrastructure. Renewable energy projects form the foundation of a future green export economy.
