Green Boost for Europe’s Power Mix: Renewables Dominate Iberdrola’s Electricity Mix from January to September 2025 with 86 Percent

Bilbao (Spain) - The Spanish energy group Iberdrola distributed 188,753 billion kWh (188,753 GWh) of electricity worldwide in the first nine months of 2025 - an increase of 6 percent compared to the previous year.

Growth was primarily driven by the United Kingdom, with an increase of 43 percent, including the acquisition of Electricity North West. In Spain, the rise was 3 percent.

“This good balance in distribution, as a result of the increase in demand and electrification,” the company told the Spanish securities regulator CNMV. Parallel to distribution, production also increased: From January to September, Iberdrola generated 96,047 billion kWh (96,047 GWh) of electricity worldwide. The Iberdrola Energía Internacional segment showed particularly strong growth with a plus of 15 percent. Production also increased in Spain (+5 %) and Brazil (+3 %). Additionally, production in the United Kingdom rose by 9 percent in the third quarter.

From a technological perspective, a clear trend toward renewable energies is evident. According to Iberdrola, 86 percent of the company’s production and 84 percent of its installed capacity now come from renewable sources. Offshore wind power increased its contribution by 33 percent, driven by projects in the UK, Germany, France, and the United States. Solar energy also grew by 41 percent.

At the end of the quarter, the company’s installed capacity stood at 57,453 megawatts. Over 40 percent of this is accounted for by onshore and offshore wind, 22 percent by hydropower, and 15 percent by solar energy. Battery capacity showed particularly strong growth, increasing by 154 percent to 503 MW.

The company’s CO2 emissions per kilowatt-hour fell from 63 grams to 57 grams year-on-year.
