Renewable Energy Expansion in the Philippines Picks Up Speed: Energy Ministry Awards More Than 10,000 MW of New RE Capacity in the Philippines

Manila (Philippines) - The government of the Philippines has set the goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s power mix to 35 percent by 2030 and to 50 percent by 2040. The expansion of renewable energy in the Philippines is therefore gaining increasing momentum.

This is reflected not only in the rising installation figures but also in the results of the current Green Energy Auction round. According to the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE), 123 projects with a total capacity of more than 10,195 MW were recently awarded in the fourth auction round. These include solar projects (solar parks, rooftop and floating installations), wind farms and renewable energy projects with battery storage. The projects are scheduled to go online between 2026 and 2029 and will also contribute to grid stability.

The results demonstrate investor confidence in the country’s clean energy transition, the energy ministry stated. According to the DOE, the auction round aligns with the government’s vision of a sustainable and energy-secure Philippines. The goal is to increase the share of renewable energy in the national power mix and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels to ensure a reliable and sustainable electricity supply for all Filipinos.

In 2024 alone, renewable energy projects with a capacity of 794.34 megawatts (MW) were newly installed in the Philippines. According to the DOE, this exceeds the combined 759.82 MW of capacity added between 2021 and 2023 (2021: 230.10 MW / 2022: 328.18 MW / 2023: 201.54 MW). In addition, the Philippine net-metering program contributed around 141 MW from 2015 to 2024, while a further 252 MW were installed from 2009 to 2024 through renewable energy self-generation projects, according to the DOE.
