Terralayr Fully Acquires BBD and Strengthens Greenfield Battery Projects in Germany

Zug (Switzerland) – The market for large-scale storage in Germany is growing rapidly, driven by renewable energy, rising industrial demand, and increasing grid requirements. With the full acquisition of BBD, Terralayr expands its capabilities in project development, permitting, and implementation of utility-scale battery storage.

With the 100% takeover of BBD, Terralayr integrates an experienced Greenfield team that has already supported key projects. The transaction includes a pipeline of over 1 GW, complements the existing 150 MW in operation or under construction, and ensures operational continuity and expertise for building a scalable platform for flexibility and grid stability in Germany.

Terralayr Consolidates Development Platform and Expertise

Terralayr, a provider specialized in large-scale batteries for energy flexibility in Germany, acquires the remaining shares of BBD, its long-standing partner in Greenfield developments. This consolidates expertise in site acquisition, permitting, grid processes, and project structuring under Terralayr’s roof.

In 2025, BBD successfully sold almost 50 MW of projects to Terralayr. This, Terralayr says, gave them the confidence to take over the entire pipeline of over 1 GW.

Philipp Man, Co-Founder and CEO of Terralayr: “This transaction further strengthens our foundations in Germany by fully integrating a development capability that has already been central to our growth. It gives us even greater control over how and where we build battery storage, while preserving the operational continuity and expertise that have made the platform successful.”

Hendrik Büchner, CEO of BBD, adds: “Fully joining Terralayr is the natural next step for our team and gives us the platform and long-term stability to scale the development of large battery projects in Germany, while preserving the entrepreneurial spirit and expertise that have defined BBD from day one.”

The acquisition is seamless: the BBD team already operates according to Terralayr’s processes and governance structures, ensuring operational continuity and retained expertise.

Expanding a Scalable Battery Storage Platform

Germany’s power system is undergoing rapid transformation, driven by the continuous expansion of renewable energy, electrification, rising industrial demand, and increasing pressure on grid stability. Large-scale battery storage is considered a key technology for grid stability, flexibility, and system resilience.

Consolidating the development platform strengthens Terralayr’s ability to efficiently initiate, prioritize, and implement projects. In addition to more than 150 MW in operation or under construction, the company has around 200 MW of projects ready for permitting. Integrating BBD’s capacities is expected to further expand the pipeline.

Terralayr manages its storage projects via its proprietary software platform LAYR, which virtualizes flexibility and enables participation in ancillary service markets, the wholesale market, and virtual battery auctions. The integration simplifies decision-making, capital allocation, and long-term value creation for the planned multi-gigawatt expansion.

The transaction underscores Terralayr’s strategic goal: building a disciplined, scalable battery platform in Germany that actively supports the energy transition and positions the company as a key player in the growing market for utility-scale storage.
