PV Electricity for E-Mobility: Tion Renewables to Supply Solar Power for German IONITY Fast-Charging Network
Munich (Germany) – Independent green electricity producer Tion Renewables and pan-European fast-charging network operator IONITY have signed a long-term power purchase agreement. Starting in 2027, Tion will supply solar power to IONITY’s German charging network — a strategic step toward climate-neutral electric mobility and the energy transition.
Solar Power from 2027 for IONITY Charging Network in Germany
Electric mobility requires green energy — delivered reliably and at scale. This is exactly where the new cooperation comes in: Tion Renewables, backed by owner EQT Group and pursuing an ambitious expansion target of 3 GW by 2030, will supply solar power to IONITY locations in Germany. The agreement gives IONITY long-term planning certainty for its green electricity procurement while providing Tion Renewables with stable demand volumes for its growing photovoltaic portfolio. In addition, Tion will provide tailored renewable energy solutions to sustainably meet the increasing demand of the charging network.
David Willemsen, Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Digitalization Officer at Tion, emphasized the strategic significance of the agreement: “Partnering with IONITY is an important step in our mission to advance renewable energy solutions across Europe. By connecting our generation expertise with their leading HPC network, we are contributing to a future where electric mobility is not only convenient, but genuinely sustainable.”
IONITY: More Than 2 Billion Kilometers Powered by Renewable Energy
According to the company, IONITY operates more than 6,000 charging stations in 24 European countries and provides charging capacities of up to 600 kW. The network is already powered entirely by renewable energy. Michael Garding, Head of Energy Management at IONITY, pointed to the growing need for renewable electricity to support further expansion of the charging network: “We have already powered more than 2 billion kilometres of electric travel with renewable energy – equivalent to over 53,000 trips around the Earth. Together with Tion, we are securing renewable electricity at scale to operate our European charging network and driving the shift to climate-friendly mobility.”
Founded in 2017, IONITY is a joint venture between BMW Group, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen Group, and BlackRock’s Climate Infrastructure Platform. With the new partnership, IONITY is further expanding its renewable energy procurement strategy in response to the growing Europe-wide demand for sustainable charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.
