Rising Power Demand from Heat Pumps and EVs: Enphase Adds Backup Power to European Home Batteries

Fremont — As growing electrification from heat pumps and electric vehicles pushes up household electricity demand across Europe, home battery systems increasingly need to combine higher capacity with resilience against power outages, without requiring owners to replace their existing installations.

To address this, US energy technology company Enphase Energy has released a software update for customers with its second-generation battery storage systems. The IQ Battery 3T and IQ Battery 10T, previously grid-tied units without backup power capability, can now be retrofitted with backup power or expanded in capacity through certified installers in a total of 13 European countries.

Technical Upgrade: Two Paths to Greater Safety and Capacity

The retrofit is enabled by a software update to the IQ Gateway, which is also built into the new IQ System Controllers. Homeowners have two options. Adding an IQ System Controller allows the system to safely disconnect the home from the grid during a power outage and continue supplying it from solar and battery power — in whole-home mode for single-phase homes, or for a selected phase with predefined circuits in three-phase homes. Alternatively, or in addition, storage capacity can be expanded with third-generation batteries (IQ Battery 5P), while existing older batteries continue operating; combined with an IQ System Controller, the FlexPhase technology in the IQ Battery 5P also enables backup power across all three phases in three-phase homes.

The upgrade is initially available in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria, Spain, Denmark, Portugal, Greece and Finland. According to the company, additional countries are to follow shortly.

Strategy: Protecting Existing Investment Rather Than New Purchases

Enphase positions the upgrade as part of a platform strategy under which already installed hardware is not replaced but expanded step by step — including across different battery generations. "Our customers can now combine batteries from different generations, add backup, and expand capacity without abandoning their original investment. That is what a truly future-ready energy system should deliver," said Sabbas Daniel, Senior Vice President Sales at Enphase Energy. According to the company, all installed batteries remain covered under their existing warranties. The upgrade is configured by Enphase-certified installers via the Enphase Installer App; training materials are provided by the company through Enphase University.

Enphase Share Price Rises

Enphase Energy, with approximately 87.8 million microinverters shipped worldwide and more than 5.2 million installed solar and storage systems in over 165 countries, is among the largest providers of microinverter-based solar and storage technology. Enphase shares, listed on the renewable energy stock index RENIXX World since July 2018, rose 1.0 percent to close at EUR 34.94 on the day of the announcement (July 21, 2026), up from EUR 34.59 the previous day. Since the start of the year, Enphase shares have gained 23.9 percent (closing price on December 30, 2025: EUR 28.21).
