Scania to Supply Battery Systems for MacLean's Electric Mining Vehicles – Electrification Cuts Operating Costs, Improves Underground Air Quality
Stockholm – Electrification is increasingly reaching the mining sector. Against this backdrop, Scania Industrial Batteries and Canadian mining equipment manufacturer MacLean Engineering have entered into a strategic partnership. Scania will supply battery systems for MacLean's expanding fleet of battery-electric mining vehicles.
Scania Becomes Preferred Battery Supplier to MacLean
MacLean Engineering is one of the leading manufacturers of specialized mobile vehicles for underground mining. As the company electrifies its vehicle fleet, it will now rely on battery systems from Scania. The partnership followed a comprehensive selection process covering technical performance, safety concepts, regulatory requirements, and service and support capabilities. According to MacLean, Scania stood out in particular for its technical expertise, transparent collaboration and long-term customer support.
Under the partnership, Scania will supply its Core 800 battery system, which is designed for demanding industrial applications and features an installed energy capacity of 97 kWh, a nominal voltage of 691 volts, integrated thermal management and its own battery management system.
More Than 2,000 Battery Systems Already in Use in Mining Worldwide
According to the company, Scania already has extensive experience in electrifying mining equipment. More than 2,000 of its battery systems are currently in operation in underground mines worldwide. The battery systems support electric drives with voltages ranging from 400 to 800 volts and cover storage capacities of between 21 and 768 kWh. They are used in drilling rigs, wheel loaders and other heavy mining vehicles, among other applications.
Through the partnership, both companies aim to further accelerate the adoption of battery-electric mining vehicles. The goal is to provide mining companies with high-performance battery systems, strong operational reliability and long-term technical support as they transition to emission-free vehicle fleets.
