Deutsche Windguard Tops 1 Gigawatt Under Technical Management

Varel, Germany – The operation of wind, solar, hybrid and storage plants is becoming increasingly complex amid rising regulatory, organizational and security requirements. Deutsche WindGuard is expanding its technical management business for renewable energy assets in Germany and the Netherlands and has reached a significant milestone.

Under the BSI Ordinance on Critical Infrastructure, power generation assets in the energy sector — including wind and solar farms — have generally been classified as critical infrastructure since 2022 once they reach an installed net rated capacity of 104 MW. Operators of such assets must regularly demonstrate to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) that they have implemented the required IT security measures. Since March 2026, the KRITIS Umbrella Act (KRITIS-Dachgesetz) has additionally required them to ensure the physical protection of their facilities.

Control Centre Monitors More Than One Gigawatt in Germany and the Netherlands for the First Time

Deutsche WindGuard's 24/7 control centre at its headquarters in Varel is monitoring renewable energy assets with a combined capacity of more than one gigawatt for the first time. The capacity is spread across wind energy, photovoltaic, hybrid and storage systems at sites in Germany and the Netherlands. According to the company, which counts itself among the leading independent service providers in the wind energy industry and employs more than 220 experts, this marks a new growth benchmark in technical management.

"Our aim is to ease operators' day-to-day workload as much as possible," said Nicolas Kluth, Head of Technical Management at Deutsche WindGuard. "Our 24/7 control centre forms the operational core of this approach. It enables us to detect faults in real time, initiate corrective action immediately and minimise downtime."

WONDER System and Dedicated Contacts: Deutsche WindGuard Prioritizes Personal Support

In addition to its control centre, Deutsche WindGuard relies on a dedicated-contact model and its proprietary wind farm management system, WONDER, which centralizes operational data, documentation and workflows.

KRITIS Compliance: Deutsche WindGuard Among First Providers with Documented BSI Evidence

According to the company, Deutsche WindGuard was one of the first providers of technical management services for wind farms to demonstrate to the BSI, as early as 2022, that its control centre meets the requirements for operators of critical infrastructure. Section 39 of the BSI Act (BSIG) has required such evidence to be renewed every three years since December 2025.

"Since then, we have been continuously enhancing our IT security standards through ongoing process optimisation, regular audits and recurring evidence of compliance – in future in accordance with Section 39 of the BSI Act," said Tobias Künne, Head of Government, Compliance & Risk at Deutsche WindGuard. KRITIS Umbrella Act to Establish Framework for Physical Resilience from 2026

Beyond the IT security requirements under the BSI Act, the German Bundestag passed the KRITIS Umbrella Act (KRITIS-Dachgesetz) on January 29, 2026, transposing the EU Directive on the Resilience of Critical Entities (CER Directive, EU 2022/2557) into German law. In force since March 17, 2026, the law establishes for the first time a nationwide, cross-sector legal framework for the physical resilience of critical infrastructure. This includes areas such as site protection, access controls and crisis management. The energy sector is explicitly included alongside sectors such as transport, health and water supply. Which specific assets in the energy sector will be classified as critical infrastructure — and therefore subject to the corresponding resilience obligations — is to be determined by a still-pending statutory ordinance. So far, only a draft bill from the Federal Ministry of the Interior is available.
