Storage Market Gains Momentum: Lindhorst Group Expands Storage Business with Tesvolt

Winsen (Aller)/Wittenberg – Germany's battery storage market is gaining significant momentum, with renewable project developers increasingly adding large-scale storage systems to their portfolios. Lindhorst Group, a family-owned corporate group focused on renewable energy, is expanding its storage business together with manufacturer Tesvolt through a new battery storage project.

According to a recent IWR analysis of the Marktstammdatenregister (Register of Market Master Data) maintained by Germany's Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), newly installed storage capacity in Germany rose by nearly 76 percent to around 5,642 megawatt-hours in the first half of 2026. Installed power output increased by roughly one third to 2,482.7 megawatts. The market is increasingly shifting toward larger storage projects and longer storage durations.

OptiPower Energiemanagement to Own 21-MWh Storage System in Wittenberg

At the Lutherstadt Wittenberg site in Saxony-Anhalt, Lindhorst Group and Tesvolt are jointly building a battery storage system with a capacity of 21 megawatt-hours (MWh) and an output of 6.4 megawatts (MW). Building permits and grid connection have already been secured, with completion planned by June 2027. The facility will be owned by OptiPower Energiemanagement GmbH, a subsidiary of Lindhorst Group. Tesvolt is responsible for construction, operational services and energy trading.

"With this project, we are expanding our BESS strategy with another important element in the forward-looking field of the energy industry," said Dr. Janis Meyerhof, member of the executive board of JLW Holding AG, part of Lindhorst Group, responsible for the renewable energy division. According to Meyerhof, the corporate group is pursuing several routes into the storage market: through its subsidiary Visiolar, Lindhorst is already active in green power storage at ground-mounted photovoltaic installations, while the group is also developing its own BESS sites on its own land and, as in Wittenberg, acquiring already-permitted, construction-ready storage projects from third parties.

Tesvolt to Handle Operations and Trading – Company Also Plans 190-MWh Battery Park in Apollensdorf

Tesvolt, a battery storage system manufacturer based in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, is responsible for the technical implementation of the Wittenberg project as well as ongoing operations and marketing of the stored power. "The use of battery storage is a decisive building block for the success of the energy transition, as it is a key lever not only to accelerate the energy transition but also to make it systemically stable," said Marco Reißhauer, Commercial Project Manager at Tesvolt AG.

According to the company, Tesvolt is also pursuing a further storage project in the Wittenberg district of Apollensdorf. Building permits have already been granted for a planned battery park with 190 megawatt-hours of storage capacity, with commissioning scheduled for March 2028.

Bavaria Leads in Capacity Additions, North Rhine-Westphalia in New Storage Capacity

Nationwide, around 2.6 million battery storage systems with a combined output of 18,483.5 megawatts and a storage capacity of 31,485.1 megawatt-hours were connected to the grid as of mid-2026, according to the IWR analysis. Among German states, Bavaria led in newly installed output in the first half of 2026 with 520.3 megawatts (up from 382.4 megawatts in the same period last year), ahead of North Rhine-Westphalia with 419.9 megawatts and Lower Saxony, where the figure more than doubled to 386.6 megawatts (from 189.1 megawatts a year earlier). In terms of newly installed storage capacity, however, North Rhine-Westphalia led with around 1,179 megawatt-hours, ahead of Bavaria and Lower Saxony.

If the expansion trend in storage additions continues, Germany's installed storage capacity could rise to around 35,000 megawatt-hours by the end of 2026, according to IWR estimates. The expansion of Lindhorst Group's storage business illustrates how Germany's growing storage market is opening up to project developers looking to extend their portfolios beyond conventional renewable generation.
