Wpd Windmanager Expands Operations Management from Plant Monitoring to Asset and Security Management

Bremen – Wpd Windmanager GmbH & Co. KG is significantly broadening the scope of its operations management for wind and solar farms beyond classic plant monitoring. The company, which oversees wind and solar assets worldwide, is expanding its service portfolio with a range of new offerings.

Operations management for wind and solar farms, once focused primarily on plant monitoring, is undergoing fundamental change. Digitalization and automation are widening the scope of tasks to include asset management as well as new regulatory and security-related requirements — developments that are also opening up new business opportunities for the company.

24/7 Control Center Takes On Additional Control Tasks

Central to this shift is Wpd Windmanager’s ISO-certified 24/7 control center, from which more than 2,800 plants are monitored worldwide. According to the company, its services now extend well beyond traditional remote monitoring.

Among other tasks, the control center coordinates plant shutdowns during periods of negative electricity prices, operates an intrusion protection system, and manages mowing operations. The control center is not limited to the company’s own customers — it is also offered as a service to other operators.

“We use our control center not only for our own customers but also offer it to other operators,” said Axel Stelzer, Director of Technical Operations at wpd windmanager. “Here, we monitor over 2,800 plants worldwide. However, our remote monitoring services now go far beyond mere monitoring.”

NIS-2, Redispatch and Battery Storage Widen the Task Portfolio

New regulatory and technical requirements are creating further areas of responsibility. According to wpd windmanager, these include information security and physical security obligations related to NIS-2, new billing procedures under Redispatch 2.0, and the integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) as well as control technology for hybrid farms.

The company is also expanding its service offering beyond classic technical and commercial operations management. For operators, wpd windmanager handles municipal tax payments, prepares emergency management plans, and monitors balancing and replacement measures.

“As an operations manager, we are increasingly in demand as a strategic partner,” said Henning Rüpke, Director of International Operations at wpd windmanager. “We must identify developments early on, act proactively, and continuously develop new solutions — and we do so on an international scale, since many of our customers operate their assets in different countries.”

More Than 7.2 GW of Wind and Solar Capacity Under Management

According to the company, wpd windmanager manages 525 wind farms worldwide comprising around 2,800 wind turbines, together with solar projects totaling 360 MW. Total wind and solar capacity under management exceeds 7.2 GW. The company employs around 600 people and operates 19 locations in ten countries across Europe, South America and Asia.
