Vestas Debuts New 7.2 MW Wind Turbine in Sweden – Series Production to Begin at End of 2027

Hamburg – Vestas received the first order for its new V182-7.2 MW onshore wind turbine one day after launching the model. Swedish project developer SR Energy has ordered four turbines with a total capacity of 28.8 MW for the Staverhult Wind Farm in southern Sweden. Commissioning is scheduled for the third quarter of 2028.

With the new turbine, Vestas is developing its EnVentus platform further. A larger rotor is intended to increase energy yield at unchanged rated capacity and improve the economics of wind energy projects. The manufacturer plans to ramp up series production from the end of 2027.

New Vestas Turbine: Larger Rotor Intended to Increase Annual Energy Yield by 4 to 6 Percent

The V182-7.2 MW has a rotor diameter of 182 metres and a swept rotor area of 26,016 square metres. Compared with the previous V172-7.2 MW, the rotor diameter increases by ten metres. Both models have a rated capacity of 7.2 MW. According to Vestas, the new turbine achieves an annual energy yield that is 4 to 6 percent higher, depending on site conditions.

In addition to the larger rotor, Vestas said it has specifically further developed the drivetrain. The ratio of rotor area to rated capacity is intended to enable higher power production, particularly at lower wind speeds. The manufacturer lists standard hub heights of 109 and 170 metres for the V182-7.2 MW. Site-specific tower variants are available on request.

The new turbine is based on the existing EnVentus platform. According to the manufacturer, more than 2,000 turbines with a combined capacity of over 15 GW were installed worldwide on this platform at the time of the market launch. The further development is intended to combine the higher energy yield with platform technology already in use.

First Order: Four V182-7.2 MW Turbines for Staverhult Wind Farm in Southern Sweden

SR Energy's order covers the supply and commissioning of four V182-7.2 MW turbines as well as a 35-year service agreement. Delivery is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2028, with commissioning planned for the third quarter of 2028.

Staverhult is thus the first announced project for the new V182-7.2 MW. Vestas plans to ramp up series production from the end of 2027 and then make the turbine available for further wind energy projects.

The new turbine continues the development within the EnVentus platform toward larger rotors at a rated capacity of 7.2 MW. While the V162-7.2 MW has a rotor diameter of 162 metres and the V172-7.2 MW of 172 metres, Vestas is again increasing the rotor area with the V182-7.2 MW. The additional yield of 4 to 6 percent stated by the manufacturer refers to the comparison with the V172-7.2 MW and depends on the respective site conditions.
