Huge Power Demand from AI Data Centers: 2G Energy Wins Major Order from Energy Vault

Heek, Germany – No electricity, no data center: the rapidly growing power demand of data centers for artificial intelligence is making an adequate and reliable power supply a central challenge for operators and developers worldwide. 2G Energy AG has received a major order from US company Energy Vault for power generation systems for AI data centers in the United States.

According to IEA projections, global data center electricity consumption is set to double from 485 TWh in 2025 to around 950 TWh in 2030. Grid connections are being delayed because the growing number of data center projects is straining planning and permitting systems. Renewable energy, including on site in combination with storage, is an option to meet the enormous power demand. Where grid capacity is limited, decentralized on-site solutions such as combined heat and power (CHP) plants or fuel cell systems can contribute to the power supply.

2G Energy Receives 275 MW Order from Energy Vault – Deliveries from Q4 2027 to Q3 2028

Energy Vault has ordered power generation systems with a capacity of 275 MW from 2G Energy. Energy Vault develops, owns and operates integrated energy solutions for utilities, independent power producers, industrial customers and the AI and data center market. The systems will be used in its "Powered Land" and "Powered Shell" solutions, which target AI and data center customers, including hyperscalers.

2G develops and manufactures decentralized energy solutions in Heek, including CHP plants, large-scale heat pumps and peak-load units. Under the Energy Vault order, the company will supply turnkey, containerized power generation systems. These will be pre-assembled and tested in Heek before being shipped to the United States. Under current project planning, delivery is scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2027 and the third quarter of 2028. In addition to delivery and commissioning, the order includes long-term service over the entire lifecycle of the systems.

"This order demonstrates that our technology and our approach to standardized, high-performance, and rapidly deployable power generation solutions meet the requirements of the rapidly growing data center market," said Pablo Hofelich, CEO of 2G Energy.

Generation, Battery Storage and VaultOS: Energy Vault Combines On-Site Power with Storage

"AI infrastructure customers need firm, always-on power on timelines that conventional grid interconnections often cannot meet," said Marco Terruzzin, Chief Revenue Officer at Energy Vault. According to 2G, on-site power generation can complement existing grid infrastructure, particularly where grid capacity is limited or additional capacity is needed at short notice.

The 2G systems are designated as the power generation layer within Energy Vault's energy architecture. They will be combined with battery storage and control systems, including the energy management software VaultOS. The systems coordinate generation and storage in real time. They are intended to support power quality and supply security and to respond to the rapidly changing loads of AI data centers.

According to the IEA, server loads at AI data centers repeatedly fluctuate by more than 50 percent of rated capacity within one second. Storage such as lithium-ion batteries is therefore becoming a critical technology for AI data centers. According to Terruzzin, the architecture can also integrate grid power and electricity from renewable energy as it becomes available.

2G Expands Manufacturing in Heek – Second Production Site by End of 2027

In response to growing demand, 2G is expanding its production capacity in Heek. A new production hall went into operation in early 2026, and a second production site is under construction, with completion scheduled by the end of 2027. From the perspective of 2G CEO Hofelich, growing power demand, limited grid capacity and constraints on infrastructure and resources are increasing the importance of alternative and decentralized power supply solutions in the data center market. 2G sees this as a long-term growth market.
