Lower Austria Bets on More Wind Energy: Nordex to Supply First N175/6.X Turbines to Austria for WEB Repowering
Hamburg – Lower Austria raised its wind energy expansion target in 2025. In the district of Gänserndorf, WEB Windenergie AG is now having existing turbines replaced with N175/6.X turbines from the Nordex Group, which will be used in Austria for the first time.
Nordex Order: Eight Turbines for Auersthal RI, 56 MW for 2028
The Nordex Group has received a 56 MW wind turbine order from WEB Windenergie AG. For the Auersthal RI project in the district of Gänserndorf, Nordex will supply and install eight N175/6.X turbines, each rated at 7 MW, replacing existing turbines. The N175/6.X is based on the Delta4000 platform. According to Nordex, these are the first turbines of this type to be installed in Austria. The order also includes a 25-year Premium Service agreement. Commissioning is planned for 2028. According to the company, with eight turbines it is the largest project Nordex has implemented in Austria to date.
WEB is an Austrian citizen-participation company that develops and operates renewable power generation assets, with a focus on wind energy. Its power plants have a total capacity of around 700 MW.
For Roman Prager, member of the WEB Executive Board, Auersthal is a first. “This is the first time we are installing turbines of this size,” said Prager.
“Modern wind turbines such as the N175/6.X make an important contribution to using existing sites more efficiently and further accelerating the expansion of renewable energy,” added Karsten Brüggemann, Vice President Region Europe at the Nordex Group.
Wind Energy in Austria: 1,447 Turbines with 4,221 MW
At the end of 2025, Austria had 1,447 wind turbines with a capacity of 4,221 MW, according to IG Windkraft. In 2025, 48 turbines with 285.3 MW were commissioned. According to IG Windkraft, the turbines installed at the end of 2025 produce 9.7 TWh of electricity annually, covering around 16 percent of Austria’s electricity consumption. For 2026, the association forecasts 44 turbines with a capacity of 251 MW.
Lower Austria has the largest installed base, with 830 wind turbines totaling 2,324 MW, accounting for more than half of national capacity. Burgenland follows with 446 turbines and 1,488.7 MW. Turbines in Lower Austria generate around 5,400 GWh of electricity (as of end-2025), equal to about one third of the state’s renewable power output. Under the updated Climate and Energy Roadmap, this is to reach 8,000 GWh by 2030.
According to IG Windkraft, projects with a combined capacity of 3,405 MW were in the permitting pipeline as of January 2026: 1,612 MW in ongoing procedures, 1,436 MW approved in the first instance and 357 MW pending before the Federal Administrative Court. This equals more than three quarters of the installed base at the end of 2025. IG Windkraft assesses that, with these projects and provided suitable framework conditions are in place, wind energy capacity could nearly double by 2030.
