Wind Farm Sömmerda in Thuringia: Energiequelle Begins Construction of Modern Enercon Large Turbines After More Than Ten Years of Project Development

Kallinchen/Sömmerda (Germany) - Energiequelle GmbH has announced the start of construction for a new wind farm in Sömmerda, Thuringia. Starting in September 2025, the company will install four Enercon E-160 wind turbines at the site.

Each turbine has a capacity of 5.56 MW, bringing the total capacity of the wind farm to 22.24 MW. The turbines will be built in a designated wind priority area, located approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Erfurt.

Following more than ten years of project development, the permit application was submitted in December 2022. Official approval was granted in March 2024. The first turbine is scheduled to go online in October 2026, with foundation work starting in May of the same year.

"The start of construction marks an important milestone for us and the region", says project developer Jürgen Fuß. The wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to supply around 10,500 households per year. According to Energiequelle, the project has a CO2 savings potential of approximately 27,000 tonnes annually.

The wind farm is part of a larger portfolio in Thuringia. Energiequelle already holds permits for three additional wind farms with a combined capacity of 66 MW. Further projects totaling 150 MW are currently under development, according to the company.

Energiequelle has been active in the renewable energy sector since 1997 and operates more than 850 installations at 28 locations worldwide. In addition to wind farms, the company also develops photovoltaic projects, substations and energy storage systems.
