Terna Approves 3 GWh Storage Project: Italy is Building Ever Larger Energy Storage Systems - Green Light for Airengy Mega-Project

Tel Aviv (Israel) - A milestone for the European energy transition: Israeli energy developer Airengy Ltd. has received the green light for one of Italy’s largest energy storage projects. Italian grid operator Terna has approved the grid connection for the facility in the Brindisi region.

With a planned storage capacity of up to 3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and a feed-in capacity of more than 500 megawatts (MW), the project is among the largest battery storage systems in the country. The facility, based on lithium-ion technology, is expected to supply electricity over several hours, thereby ensuring the stability of the Italian power grid and significantly improving the integration of renewable energy.

The investment volume amounts to around €230 million, with expected annual revenues of €35 to €50 million. Construction is estimated to take around 20 months after signing the grid connection agreement.

The project is being developed in a 50:50 partnership with 7B of the Yehuda-Levi Group and marks a key step in Airengy Ltd.’s European expansion strategy.

With Terna’s approval, one of Italy’s most significant storage projects has reached the next stage of development - a strong signal of the growing demand for large-scale energy storage in Europe.
