RWE Signs Long-Term Wind Power PPA With Breedon to Decarbonise the UK Construction Materials Industry
Essen (Germany) - Long-term power purchase agreements are an important instrument of the energy transition: RWE has signed a 15-year PPA with UK-based Breedon Group. The deal combines the supply of renewable electricity from RWE’s UK wind energy portfolio with industrial decarbonisation and highlights the role of long-term PPAs in reducing industrial emissions.
Long-term wind power PPA between RWE and Breedon until 2041
RWE has concluded a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with UK-based Breedon Group, linking the supply of renewable electricity with industrial decarbonisation. The contract runs for 15 years until 2041 and covers an annual volume of around 70 gigawatt hours of renewable energy from RWE’s UK wind energy portfolio.
Electricity will initially be supplied from the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea off the coast of North Wales. From 2033, supply will be taken over by the Brechfa Forest West onshore wind farm in Wales. The PPA thus ensures long-term supply of renewable electricity for industrial applications.
Olaf Lubenow, Head of Commodity Solutions UK, Northern and Southern Europe at RWE, welcomed the cooperation: “We are delighted to have concluded this long-term PPA with Breedon. The agreement underlines our commitment to supporting the construction materials sector on its journey towards a more sustainable future. By supplying reliable renewable electricity from our wind portfolio, we are helping to reduce the carbon footprint of Breedon’s operations while supporting their ambition to build a more sustainable construction materials business.”
Breedon uses PPA to drive decarbonisation of construction materials production
Breedon Group is one of the leading construction materials producers in the United Kingdom and operates production capacities for aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and cement. Energy consumption in these processes makes the industry particularly emission-intensive, making decarbonisation correspondingly challenging.
With the concluded PPA, Breedon secures long-term renewable electricity for its UK operations and thereby reduces Scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity.
Donna Hunt, Group Sustainability Director at Breedon, emphasised the strategic importance: “Entering this Power Purchase Agreement with RWE is a meaningful step forward in our sustainability journey. It not only secures long-term energy stability for Breedon but also accelerates the decarbonisation of our operations and supports our continued investment in innovative, lower carbon products and solutions for the built environment.”
Breedon has committed under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to significantly reduce its emissions across the value chain. Specifically, it aims to reduce absolute Scope 1, Scope 2 and relevant Scope 3 emissions by 23.3 percent by 2030 compared with 2022 levels, and to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
In addition to increased use of renewable electricity, the company is also focusing on energy efficiency measures, fuel switching and technological approaches such as carbon capture to further advance the decarbonisation of construction materials production.
