RWE Reaches Next Milestone at 1.6-GW Offshore Flagship Project — Nordseecluster A Feeds First Power into German Grid
Essen — RWE's Nordseecluster A offshore wind project has reached another milestone. About six weeks after installing its first wind turbine, a turbine has fed electricity into the German transmission grid for the first time. The first construction phase of the offshore wind farm, with a capacity of 660 MW, is scheduled to be fully operational in early 2027.
Nordseecluster to Reach 1,560 MW by 2029
The Nordseecluster is being built in two phases and is expected to reach a combined installed capacity of 1,560 MW once both are complete. The first phase, Nordseecluster A (660 MW), will be followed by Nordseecluster B, adding a further 900 MW. Production of key components for the second phase has already begun. Installation of the foundations is scheduled for 2027, with the 60 Vestas offshore turbines to be erected in 2028. Nordseecluster B is set to begin operations in early 2029.
Once fully completed, the Nordseecluster will generate around 6.5 terawatt-hours (6.5 billion kWh) of electricity annually, according to the company. This is equivalent, on a calculated basis, to the annual consumption of around 1.6 million households. Part of the output has already been contracted under long-term agreements: Amazon has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for 110 MW from Nordseecluster B.
One of Germany's Largest Offshore Wind Projects
The Nordseecluster is being developed around 50 kilometers north of the island of Juist in Germany's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in the North Sea. The project comprises four sites (NC 1 to NC 4), which are being developed jointly due to their proximity. Bundling construction and key supply and installation contracts is intended to capture economies of scale and optimize costs and construction schedules.
The offshore wind project is being realized by RWE (51 percent) together with Norges Bank Investment Management (49 percent), with RWE responsible for construction and operation of the wind farm. Once completed, at least 104 offshore wind turbines of the Vestas V236-15.0 MW type will be installed, reaching a total capacity of 1,560 MW.
