AI Data Centres as a Growth Market: 1Komma5° and 2G Energy Partner on Decentralised Power Supply
Berlin – 1Komma5°, a provider of decentralised energy solutions, and 2G Energy, a manufacturer specialising in combined heat and power plants and decentralised energy technology, have agreed a technology partnership to supply power to AI data centres. The companies plan to intelligently link gas engine plants, photovoltaics and battery storage and optimise the energy supply.
Heartbeat AI to Link Gas Engine Plants, Photovoltaics and Battery Storage
Under the cooperation, 2G Energy’s gas-to-power and combined heat and power plants are to be integrated into 1Komma5°’s Heartbeat AI energy management platform. The software is intended to coordinate power generation, battery storage and grid power draw in real time, taking into account electricity exchange prices and respective consumption. The companies aim to make better use of existing grid connections and make the power supply of data centres more cost-effective.
For 1Komma5°, the partnership represents a strategic expansion of the application range of Heartbeat AI. The software, which has mainly been used to control decentralised energy systems in private households, is to increasingly integrate larger industrial power generation plants and consumers such as data centres.
AI Data Centres Drive Growth at 2G Energy
For 2G Energy, supplying power to AI data centres is becoming an important growth driver. In September 2026, the company reported a large order from US energy infrastructure company Energy Vault for power generation plants with a total capacity of 275 MW. Delivery is scheduled between the fourth quarter of 2027 and the third quarter of 2028.
In the United States, the plants are to be combined with battery storage and Energy Vault’s VaultOS control software. The US company will handle the integration of the various components into a supply solution for data centres.
In view of sharply increased demand, particularly from the data centre market, 2G has raised its 2027 revenue forecast to EUR 600 million to EUR 650 million. For 2026, the company expects revenue of up to EUR 490 million.
Grid and Gas Turbine Bottlenecks Increase Need for Alternative Supply Concepts
The expansion of data centres is being hampered by limited grid connection capacity. According to the IEA, waiting times for a grid connection can be five to ten years in many countries. At the same time, large order backlogs and production bottlenecks for large gas turbines are delaying the realisation of new power plant projects.
Modular power generation plants combined with battery storage offer an approach to supplying data centres independently of, or in addition to, the public grid and to using existing grid connections more efficiently.
Both Energy Vault’s US order and the new cooperation between 1Komma5° and 2G Energy reflect the development of integrated supply systems. While Energy Vault handles system integration itself, under the partnership with 1Komma5° the existing Heartbeat AI platform is to coordinate the various energy components. The cooperation initially focuses on Germany and Europe.
Because of long grid connection times and supply bottlenecks for large gas turbines, the rapid provision of additional power capacity is becoming an important competitive factor for AI data centres. Modular, decentralised supply systems offer an alternative to large power plant projects. The cooperation between 1Komma5° and 2G Energy adds software-based coordination of power generation, battery storage, photovoltaics and grid power draw to this approach.
